After a month of lying in bed thinking, Richard found himself uttering a prayer. “God, I know You do not exist. But if You do, which I’m sure You don’t, it’s up to You to make Yourself known to me. It is not my duty to seek You. I regret that You do not exist. I wish that somewhere in this universe there should beat a heart of love. I speak like a madman to someone who does not exist. Well, that’s all.” He felt foolish even saying the words. Who prays to someone he doesn’t believe in? he asked himself.

Soon afterward, one of the nurses delivered a book to his bedside. “This is from a woman in room 312,” she said. “She is too ill to leave her room to bring the book to you herself, but she thinks you will be interested in it.”

Richard looked at the book the nurse had laid on the nightstand beside his bed. It had a brown leather cover with the title embossed in gold letters across it: A Nineteenth Century Miracle: The Brothers Ratisbonne and the Congregation of Notre Dame de Sion. He picked up the book, opened it, and began to read.
